Mehlville administrators receive 1.5-percent pay hike for 2012-’13

Franz supports pay increase for Mehlville superintendent

Mehlville School District administrators and directors, including Superintendent Eric Knost, received a 1.5-percent raise for the 2012-2013 school year.

The pay raise for administrators and directors, excluding Knost, was approved by the Board of Education with a 6-1 vote last week. Board member Rich Franz was opposed.

Knost’s 1.5-percent pay raise was voted on separately and approved with a 7-0 vote.

Classified employees received a 2.5-percent raise with a 6-1 vote. Franz was opposed.

Franz told the Call he voted against raises for administrators, directors and classified employees because he does not believe the economy, specifically within the district, has recovered.

“I think the message the school board needs to continue to send to the community is that we’re sensitive to that, and we’re fiscally responsible and we’re going to keep in mind the financial condition of the taxpayers when talking about raises,” he said.

However, Franz said he voted in favor of granting Knost a raise because he believes Knost is “doing a great job” in his first year as superintendent.

“I think he has done a wonderful job of making inroads to bring the community together, to heal the relationship between the school board and the community,” he said. “… I think we sent a message to the superintendent and the community that we appreciate the job he’s doing, and we continue to support him.”
