The Lindbergh High School girls’ tennis team won its first match of the season last week, defeating Oakville at home.
“We’ve run into some pretty good teams at the beginning of the season,” said Lindbergh head coach Laura Conti, whose team is 1-5 on the year. “Our doubles teams are coming on. They should be formidable as the season goes on.”
The reverse is true for Oakville.
“Our doubles teams need to step it up,” Oakville head coach Linda Gebauer said. “We’ve won once in our last six matches. I’m going to have to make some changes.”
The Tigers’ strength has been their singles play. Led by seniors Amanda Macklin, Elise Beckemeier and junior Tori Wheeler, Gebauer has been impressed with their experience and work ethic.
“They have played in tournaments in the off-season. They take lessons. They are very heads-up type of players,” Gebauer said.
The Oakville girls’ tennis team will travel to Ladue and Eureka this week before the start of the conference tournament Sept. 22.
The Tigers are 3-4 so far this season despite an exclusive road schedule.
Lindbergh is 1-5 so far and will travel to Parkway West today — Sept. 18. The Flyers, too, will begin conference tourney play Sept. 22.
