After another somewhat sluggish first half of football Friday night, the Lindbergh High School Flyers came out ready to play in the second half and pulled out a 28-21 win over Lafayette in a Suburban West Con-ference matchup.
Brock Bond led the way for the unbeaten Flyers (5-0), running for a nine-yard touchdown and throwing two touchdown passes — 44 and 26 yards — to Chris Geisz.
Geisz had three catches for 97 yards in the win, as Bond utilized five different re-ceivers to accumulate 255 yards of offense through the air. He also led the Flyers in rushing with 65 yards on 11 carries.
Lindbergh Coach Tom Beauchamp was impressed with Bond’s play once again despite the Flyers’ slow start that saw them trailing the Lancers (3-2) at the half, 14-7.
“Having so many receivers to throw to really helps Brock,” Beauchamp told the Call. “Geisz had the scoring catches, but Andrew Spitzfaden had some huge catches for us, too.”
Spitzfaden actually led the Flyers in receiving yardage, pulling in four catches for 115 yards. Chris Luebbert added two catches for 28 yards.
Despite the rough first half for Lindbergh, by the fourth quarter the Flyers had put the game away, scoring 21 consecutive second-half points to take a 28-14 lead be-fore Lafayette scored a touchdown with just five seconds to go in the game. No doubt the Flyers are happy with another win, but Beauchamp knows they are starting to get themselves into tough spots.
“We decided to play a little more like men in the second half,” Beauchamp said. “But it’s not a good habit we’re in. We haven’t been on all cylinders in the first half in some games.”
Dan Gabris once again led all Lindbergh defenders, getting involved in 10 tackles, but Beauchamp also was quick to note the strong play of Ron Fink, who was a leader on defense in the second half in the Lindbergh secondary.
“Ron played a big part in our second half defensive adjustments,” Beauchamp said of Fink, who had four tackles in the game.
Lindbergh now prepare for Mar-quette, will which comes into the game at 3-2, but is fresh off a big loss to Mehlville, 41-12.
Beauchamp is not going to let that score change the way his team prepares, though.
“Marquette has a lot of good athletes and has won some games,” he said. “We’ll be ready to play a good, physical game.”
Lindbergh will play Marquette at 7 p.m. Friday at Marquette High School, 2351 Clarkson Road.
