A Lindbergh High School senior was killed and her friend injured in a car accident shortly before midnight New Year’s Eve on Interstate 44 in Webster Groves, authorities said.

Julia E. Moss, 18, of south county was pronounced dead at 12:10 a.m. Saturday after driving her car into a concrete barrier off Interstate 44, according to a report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Kelley C. Miller, 17, of Crestwood, a friend and the only passenger in the vehicle, was in stable condition Monday at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Miller also is a Lindbergh High senior.

Moss’ vehicle headed eastbound and ran off the road when she failed to negotiate a curve near the Laclede Station Road exit, according to the accident report.

Her car overturned after hitting the ground and struck a concrete barrier.

Neither victim wore a seat belt and Miller was ejected from the car.

Moss lived with her parents, Bernard and Denice Moss, and her 12-year-old sister, Maddie.

She was a member of the Lindbergh High student newspaper, the yearbook and the Evangelical Full Gospel Assembly.

Several students had placed memorials by the flagpole at Lind-bergh High over the weekend.

“It’s very tragic, very tragic,” Lindbergh High Principal Ron Helms said. “She was a good student. She was involved at school. She was greatly involved at her church, just a very thoughtful, caring young lady. It’s a real loss to the community.”

The State Highway Patrol reported a total of nine deaths from 6 p.m. Dec. 31 to 11:59 p.m. Jan. 2. The state patrol is investigating 166 accidents, including 77 injuries.

During a 102-hour period last year, 12 fatalities were reported. State police investigated 329 accidents, including 138 injuries.
