Lindbergh High School sisters Kat and Alex Rosenberger recently won the school’s first Class 2 doubles state championship in 21 years.
The sisters defeated Faith Wright and Katherine Dudley of Rock Bridge High School in a 6-4, 7-6 victory in the state championship match.
Overall, the Rosenbergers ended the season with a 21-1 doubles record.
Lindbergh head coach Laura Conti told the Call that the sisters had a great year, defeating some very tough competitors along the way.
“They played exceptional tennis all year,” she said. “I am really happy for them and proud of what they were able to accomplish.”
In a district news release, Conti stated, “Kat was rock solid from start to finish with steady, penetrating groundstrokes and a killer serve. Alex followed with her athleticism and great hands to confound opponents — finessing the ball one minute and smashing winners the next.”
Because both sisters are great individual tennis players, Conti said it was a tough decision early on whether to have them compete together or play individually. But given their success at state, Conti believes the right decision was made.
Alex finished first in the high jump at the Class 5 track and field championships last spring. But this state championship was “a lot more exciting since I was able to share it with Kat,” she stated in the release. “I definitely knew we could do it, but we knew it would be tough and it was.”
Kat and Alex won the Class 2 consolation title in doubles a year ago, and their mother was part of Lindbergh’s last doubles state championship in 1984. After finishing second in 1983, Noel Quevreaux (Rosenberger) and Shannon Cook topped Rock Bridge to win the title the following year.
The best part of the state championship is that Kat is a junior and Alex is a sophomore, so they will continue to play for Lindbergh, according to Conti.
“There are lots of good things to come,” she said.
