Coming off a deep postseason run last fall, the Lindbergh Flyers boys soccer team is setting its sights even higher this season.
Lindbergh finished last season with an impressive record before falling just short in the state quarterfinals against De Smet, a loss that has left the team hungry to take the next step. Head coach Jacob Pittroff believes the mix of senior leadership, battle-tested returners and talented underclassmen gives his squad the tools to contend for both conference and state championships this season.
Pittroff said the offseason has been “really positive,” crediting his players’ commitment to both fitness and game preparation. The Flyers held camp throughout July, where the focus was on building physical conditioning and sharpening tactical play.
“The guys have come with a good attitude and willingness to work hard and push each other,” Pittroff said. “The energy at practice has been high tempo. They’re locked in.”
Leading the way this season will be senior captain Grant Evans, who anchors the defensive line, and fellow captain Gio Nicastro, a steadying force in the midfield known for his technical and tactical skill.
“These guys are big-time players who have played in big games,” Pittroff said of his captains. “Their experience will be key.”
Joining Evans on defense are Aiden Vojka and Jack Wiess, while Brody Busby will play a pivotal role in driving the attack out of the backfield and midfield. Nicastro will be relied on heavily in the middle of the field to orchestrate play and provide stability.
The Flyers will also lean on youth this season. Sophomore Adam Becker is expected to be a breakout offensive threat, giving Lindbergh an added spark up top. Pittroff said his development will be crucial as the Flyers push toward another deep postseason run.
The goals for Lindbergh are clear: win districts, compete for the Suburban Conference (Champions League) Cup and return to the Final Four.
“Our biggest strength is our experience and the ability to help players unlock untapped potential for the betterment of the team,” Pittroff said.
With the sting of last year’s quarterfinal loss still fresh, the Flyers enter 2025 motivated and confident. If the mix of senior leadership and young playmakers clicks, Lindbergh could very well be playing deep into November.
