The Lindbergh Flyers boys basketball team is gaining valuable experience this season.
At 6-8, the Flyers record doesn’t show how close the team is to having a winning record. Of Lindbergh’s eight losses, six are by two possessions or less.
“We have struggled with experience so far this year,” Biggs said. “Understanding of game situations and the flow of the game will be a couple of things that will continue to improve as more guys get more experience.”
Biggs complimented his team on never giving up and continuing to give it their all despite some recent struggles. The team is currently embroiled in a three-game skid where the Flyers have dropped games to DeSmet, Logan-Rogersville and Hickman.
“Our guys have been playing extremely hard,” Biggs said. “We have a group of skilled guys who play unselfishly for one another.”
David Hardesty is leading the team, averaging 15.2 points per game. Aiden Knuckles and Alex Hessler follow, averaging around eight points per game.
“David Hardesty hit the ground running at the beginning of the season and hasn’t looked back,” Biggs said. “The past few weeks, Aiden Knuckles and Alex Hessler have turned a corner and contributed in a big way offensively.”
Biggs also said Brady Stitz may not be lighting up the scoreboard on the offensive side, sitting at five points per game, but he has had a strong season defensively.
“Brady has guarded the other team’s best player and done an outstanding job of limiting great players all year,” Biggs said.
As the season rolls on, Biggs is hoping that the experience gained by some of his players will lead to some more wins.
“We have been very competitive in almost every game this season,” he said. “As we gain experience and confidence throughout the season, we’d love to see some more of those close ones go our direction. The second half of the season is a good time to peak as we head into the majority of our conference schedule.”
With a few snow days over the last couple of weeks, Biggs credited his team for being flexible when it came to games and practices being rescheduled.
“The snow days were a lot of wait and see, which often leads to plans changing in an instant,” he said. “I’m fortunate to have a group of committed guys who love practice that were able to change plans quickly. We did have all three games that week rescheduled, which led to a week full of practices coming off of a couple of losses. Players and coaches were both ready to get the bad taste of some losses out of our mouths and the snow delayed that from happening.”
As for his outlook on the second half of Lindbergh’s season, Biggs is hoping to see some victories in those close games that his squad dropped earlier in the season.
“I’d love to see our guys continue to improve throughout the second half of the season,” he said. “The biggest thing that we can gain would be confidence through experience. If we can close out close games, we will win quite a few in these (next) couple of months.”
Lindbergh will next be in action on Jan. 28 against Pattonville.
