The Lindbergh High School baseball team had endured enough. After suffering a six-game losing streak, a win over Kirkwood May 1 was just what the doctor ordered.
Jack Politte did a little bit of everything for the Flyers, pitching a complete game and smacking two hits with an RBI in the 3-2 win.
“Jack Politte has been outstanding on the mound this season and especially his last four starts,” coach Darin Scott said. “He always keeps us in the game and just flat-out competes. He also had an RBI single which helped us to the victory after a triple by Austin Jones.”
Along with going two-for-three with the bat, Politte scattered seven hits around, allowing two earned runs and striking out five batters in the victory. He improved to 2-3 on the season from the mound. Lindbergh upped its record to 14-13 with the win.
During the six-game skid, Scott said the team remained positive.
“We have continued to try to remain positive and continue to make changes in our approach offensively to lead to opportunities for success,” he said. “It has been a tough stretch of mostly very close games that could have gone either way. We just want to stick to what was successful early in the season, but make sure we are ready to compete on the next pitch and next play of the game.”
Winning its first nine-of-10 games, Scott said expectations may have been raised a bit prematurely for the Flyers.
“When you start off hot, the expectation levels and the bar for excellence is raised sometimes unfairly,” the Lindbergh coach said. “We just want to get back to having an opportunity to win ball games when it matters most.”
With five games left until district play begins, Scott said his team will be getting back to focusing on improving the little things that are important in baseball.
“We will be ready come district time,” he said. “We do have to get back on track and continue to do little things which lead to greater things down the road.”
Lindbergh was set to close out the home portion of its regular season schedule with senior night on Wednesday at home against Parkway West – after The Call went to press.
