Parents and fifth-grade students at Sappington Elementary School are sponsoring a lemonade stand today — May 17 — to provide financial support to the family of third-grader Lonnie Avent, who was killed May 9 after being hit by a car.
Proceeds from the “Lemonade for Lonnie” stand will help the family pay for funeral arrangements for their son. Lemonade will be sold all day, beginning at 10 a.m., on the Sappington Elementary School parking lot, 11011 Gravois Road. There is no set price for the drinks, but donations will be accepted.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Lonnie’s family during this extremely difficult time,” Sappington Principal Craig Hamby stated in a news release. “I am proud of our Sappington community for coming together and supporting them when they need it most.”
In a letter to parents last week, Hamby said Lonnie was an excellent student and a great young man, and that his passion for life and sense of humor will be greatly missed by all of his friends, teachers and classmates at Sappington.
In addition, Brian McKenna and Jeff Burton from 590 AM “The Man” will broadcast live from from noon to 3 p.m. at Sappington. Both radio personalities are former Lindbergh High School students, and they will enter every donor’s name in for a chance to win Cardinals tickets during their broadcast.
