Legislation to be introduced for Islamic community center in Lemay

After initially rejecting plans to construct an Islamic community center in Lemay, the County Council was set this week to introduce legislation that would lead to approving the center.

Third District Councilwoman Colleen Wasinger, R-Town and Country, said last week that she plans to introduce a bill showing support for the Islamic community center if county officials can solve issues with traffic and its operating hours.

The Islamic community center originally was rejected 4-3 in April.

Sixth District Councilman John Campisi, R-south county, who represents the area in question, was one of the four who voted against it. He was joined by Wasinger, 3rd District Chairman Mike O’Mara, D-north county, and 7th District Councilman Greg Quinn, R-Ballwin.

The Islamic center would be a 25,000-square-foot building on 4.72 acres on the west side of Lemay Ferry Road and 75 feet northeast of Buckley Road near Mehlville Senior High School.
