Heavy rains inundated the St. Louis region on Tuesday, resulting in flash flooding and road closures. The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for the area, which remained in effect until 3 p.m., as persistent storms brought between 2 to 6 inches of rainfall.
According to data collected from the NWS, Shrewsbury received 3.83 inches of rain. Localized flash flooding caused several disruptions, with trees downed, highways and roads shut down and reports of flooded basements.
Municipalities such as Sunset Hills and Fenton saw road closures. In Sunset Hills, Rott Road and West Watson Road were closed from Pagada Parkway to Weber Hill Road due to high water. Similarly, in Fenton, Horan Road at Larkin Williams Road was closed due to river flooding.
In Affton, a GoFundMe has been started for the Affton Athletic Association. According to the GoFundMe page, the heavy rain caused the creek behind the athletic fields to flood, damaging the fields and both concession stands.
The flash flood warning issued earlier Tuesday covered much of the county, including St. Louis City and Franklin, Jefferson, St. Charles, and Warren counties in Missouri, as well as Monroe and St. Clair counties in Illinois.
The NWS has issued a flood warning along the entire Mississippi River. A flood warning has also been extended in Arnold along the Meramec River, which is currently experiencing minor flooding and is expected to persist until early Tuesday morning. As of 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, the river stage was at 25.7 feet, with a peak forecast of 26 feet expected early Thursday afternoon. The flood stage for the Meramec River is 24 feet, and the river is projected to fall below this level by late Sunday evening.
