Those with a sweet tooth are in luck. Following the Green Park Planning and Zoning Commission’s recommendation of approval on Sept. 2, the municipality’s Board of Aldermen approved the final development plan for Bruster’s Real Ice Cream at its Sept. 15 meeting.
The new walk-up ice cream shop will be located at 5702 S. Lindbergh Blvd., the former site of Church’s Texas Chicken, at the intersection of Lin Ferry Drive and South Lindbergh Boulevard.
“Bruster’s is a privately held, family-owned company that franchises. They have 200 stores, so it’s pretty small. We’re going to be the first in St. Louis,” Christopher Pelech, the applicant and future owner of the store, said. “(Bruster’s) own(s) our own dairy farm in Titusville, Pennsylvania. All of the product comes directly from them, and then we make it onsite … The service, the product, the taste, the quality is all fantastic. We’re brand new to St. Louis, so I’m really excited to bring it here.”
Pelech and his wife, Daphne, plan on purchasing the building to run their store in, as opposed to renting it, a fact that seemed to ease the minds of a few board members who had inquired. The current owner of the building lives in California and has let the property become overgrown on multiple occasions.
It was also asked by the board if the shop would have a public restroom; the answer was no. Ward 1 Alderman Carol Hamilton then questioned how close the patio would be to South Lindbergh Boulevard, as it is a major corridor and almost always busy.
“When you look at the survey, there is a good, I don’t know, 15 yards, maybe, between our property line and the street itself,” Pelech said. “Once this is approved, if it’s approved, then we should ask the city and county to review the building.”
And approved it was. The first and second readings passed unanimously, and the final roll call vote was no different. An opening date has not yet been announced, as a few additional steps must be completed with St. Louis County before the area’s first Bruster’s becomes a reality.
