GoFundMe launched for husband of Mehlville teacher recovering from accident

A GoFundMe page has been started for the husband of a Mehlville School District teacher.

Stephanie Coleman, a teacher in the Mehlville School District, is fundraising money to help her husband, Jason Coleman, recover from spinal cord trauma sustained in a biking accident June 15.

According to a GoFundMe page organized by the Coleman family, Jason was riding his bike back to a friend’s house in Bentonville, Arkansas, after spending the day mountain biking when a pedestrian walked across the road in front of Jason and his friend. Jason swerved to avoid hitting the pedestrian and went into a ditch on the side of the road, hitting a block of concrete.

“This was a simple act of kindness turned wrong,” Stephanie Coleman said on the GoFundMe page.

Jason was airlifted to Cox Memorial South Hospital in Springfield, Missouri, where he was sent into neurosurgery to have a disk removed and metal plate put in to stabilize his neck. The diagnosis from neurosurgeons show that Jason has a serious spinal cord injury that has left him paralyzed from the shoulders down.

The family is seeking donations to help cover current medical costs and future costs. Jason lost his job last year due to downsizing and has no unemployment, medical benefits or long-term benefits to help his care. Funds will be put towards recovery, surgeries, therapy, further procedures and rehabilitation.

As of June 23, the GoFundMe had raised $38,640 of its $500,000 goal.
