After playing to a 17-11 season in 2009, the Lindbergh High School volleyball squad lost six players to graduation, yet head coach Johanna Wieter believes it isn’t asking too much to set her team’s flight plan for a district championship.
“We’ll start a lot of young players,” she said. “But we’re going to keep the ball in play.”
Leading this year’s squad will be seniors Meghan Buerk, Sammie Jurado and Molly Krus. Buerk saw a lot of playing time last year on the front row. Krus will return as the team’s setter.
Junior Jill Harmon will return to her spot in the middle of the front row. She was a midseason addition last year.
Expected to make the transition from junior varsity this season will be sophomore libero Michelle Gregory and freshman Kaitlin Schwent, whose sister also played volleyball at Lindbergh.
Perhaps the biggest addition to the 2010 Flyers squad will be two new coaches with college coaching experience.
Michelle Moser comes to Lindbergh’s junior varsity position from junior college ranks while freshman coach Rob Langevin comes from a four-year college.
“These new coaches are a huge addition,” Wieter said.
Another new wrinkle will be the 16-team Oakville Tournament.
“We play in a very tough conference,” Wieter said. “We want to play all the tough teams. There will be some out-of-state teams at the Oakville Tournament. We want to play them.
“We’re also scheduling Westminster, Notre Dame and Ursuline.”
At the end of the season, Wieter hopes her team will be ready for her challenge — winning the district tournament.
