“Why Redevelopment” will be the topic of the first of three interactive seminars planned by Crestwood officials to discuss redevelopment with residents.

The first seminar will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, in the Aldermanic Chambers at City Hall, 1 Detjen Drive, according to City Administrator Don Greer.

The Board of Aldermen recently voted to withdraw a request for redevelopment proposals for the Watson/Grant Redevelopment Area and establish a moratorium on redevelopment.

As first reported by the Call, Greer had proposed a moratorium on redevelopment in a Sept. 5 memorandum to Mayor Jim Robertson and the Board of Aldermen.

Besides the moratorium, Greer proposed one or more forums to begin “an accurate, truthful series of discussions with Crestwood residents” about redevelopment.

During the Sept. 9 Board of Aldermen meeting, Robertson, saying he was speaking “to the people of Crestwood,” read a prepared statement that echoed Greer’s call for a moratorium on redevelopment and proposed “interactive seminars” for residents about redevelopment.

In his Sept. 19 operations report, Greer noted that “Why Redevelopment” would be the topic of the first forum.

Other issues included in the discussion of that topic will be:

• “Why do cities participate in redevelopment?”

• “Why public financial participation?”

The topic of the second forum, scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, at City Hall, will be “Redevelopment Tools and Plans.”

Other issues included in the discussion of that topic will be:

• Tax-increment financing, transportation development districts, community im-provement districts and the state’s Urban Redevelopment Corporation Law, also known as Chapter 353 of the Missouri State Statutes.

• “Watson Road redevelopment areas.”

The topic of the third forum, scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16, at City Hall, will be “Alternative Housing.”

Other issues included in the discussion of that topic will be:

• “Economics of density.”

• “Population and sales tax in St. Louis County.”

Robertson said he also would address redevelopment issues in upcoming issues of the Crestwood Connections.
