Filing set to begin next week for primary election in August

Filing set to begin next week for primary election in August

Filing for the Tuesday, Aug. 7, primary for county, state and federal offices will open next week.

Filing will begin at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, and continue through 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 27.

Steve Stenger

In St. Louis County, the county executive seat now held by Democrat Steve Stenger is up for election, along with County Council seats in the 1st District, 3rd District, 5th District and 7th District.

Stenger plans to seek re-election. Ladue businessman Mark Mantovani and University City real-estate agent Bill Ray have announced they plan to challenge Stenger in the Democratic primary.

Third District Councilwoman Colleen Wasinger, R-Huntleigh, is not running for her council seat this year, but has been contemplating seeking the GOP nomination for county executive.

Council members up for election this year are 1st District Councilwoman Hazel Erby, D-University City; 5th District Councilman Pat Dolan, D-Richmond Heights; and 7th District Councilman Mark Harder, R-Ballwin,

Former county police Chief Tim Fitch recently kicked off his campaign for the Republican nomination for the 3rd District council seat now held by Wasinger.

Also up for election is the county assessor’s position held by Democrat Jake Zimmerman. Zimmerman, a former state representative, has served as assessor since 2011.

Missouri House

In the Missouri House, up for election are seats held by Democrat Sarah Unsicker of Shrewsbury in District 91, Democrat Doug Beck of Affton in District 92, Democrat Bob Burns of Affton in District 93, Republican Cloria Brown of Lemay in District 94, Republican Marsha Haefner of Oakville in District 95 and Republican David Gregory of Sunset Hills in District 96.

Also up for election is the District 97 seat held by Democrat Mike Revis, who just won election Feb. 6 to fill the unexpired term of Rep. John McCaherty, R-Fenton.

Brown recently announced she will not seek re-election due to health issues.

Two local businessmen have announced they plan to seek the GOP nomination for the District 94 seat — Jim Murphy of Oakville and Ron Rammaha of Concord.

Mehlville Board of Education member Jean Pretto of Oakville has announced she will seek the Democratic nomination for Brown’s seat.

In District 95, Haefner cannot seek re-election due to term limits.

In District 97, Revis told the Call that he plans to seek re-election to the seat he just won after defeating Republican David Linton of Fenton.

“At this point, yes, we have to continue this fight for labor and for education, so I’m planning it,” he said.

The district is mostly in Jefferson County, but includes some areas of Concord in south county around Meramec Bottom Road and Hagemann Elementary.

Former Arnold City Councilman Phil Amato announced last week that he intends to seek the Republican nomination for the District 97 seat.

“I am not here to be something, I am here to do something,” he stated in a news release.

U.S. House

A host of Democratic candidates are vying for their party’s nod in an effort to unseat U.S. Rep. Ann Wagner, R-Ballwin.

Democratic candidates throwing their hat into the ring include attorney Cort VanOstran, Army veteran and south county native Mark Osmack, St. Louis elected school board member Bill Haas and political science professor John Messmer.
