The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office issued charges on April 15 against suspect Patrick Steinway, 41, of the 4800 block of Southridge Park Drive, 63129, for stealing $25,000 or more.
Steinway is being held on a $25,000 cash only, no 10% bond.
The charges are merely accusations. Steinway is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
According to a probable cause statement, Detective No. 1 responded to the Bank of Hillsboro to investigate a theft of money from St. Margaret Mary Alacoque Church. During this investigation, it was learned that Steinway was a volunteer at St. Margaret Mary Alacoque Church and an employee of the Bank of Hillsboro. Steinway ran the athletic department at St. Margaret Mary Alacoque Church, where he collected and processed fees for the athletic programs.
During Steinway’s employment at the Bank of Hillsboro, random audits of non-profit accounts held by the bank were performed. Detective No. 1 was notified by the bank of irregularities regarding St. Margaret Mary Alacoque Church’s accounts, particularly that Steinway had opened two church accounts and one personal account and was moving money from the church accounts into his personal account. Upon further investigation, St. Margaret Mary Alacoque Church provided additional records of missing funds and confirmed they had not authorized the two accounts at the Bank of Hillsboro.
As he was still an employee of the bank at the time, Steinway was called in and questioned by his employer regarding the irregularities between the accounts. Based on the records of the church and the records of the bank, it was verified that Steinway stole more than $25,000.00.
The St. Louis County Police Department Bureau of Crimes Against Property detectives are handling this investigation.
