Police arrested two Cahokia, Ill., brothers in connection with the Nov. 10 shooting deaths of two employees at the Green Park Steak ‘n Shake.
Anthony D. Akins, 20, and Oundr’e Akins, 19, were arrested last week. Both were charged with two counts of first-degree murder, robbery and three counts of armed criminal action.
Two Green Park Steak ‘n Shake employees were shot to death in an apparent robbery sometime between 2:30 and 4:30 a.m. Nov. 10 inside the restaurant at 5828 S. Lindbergh Blvd. The two were identified as Mark L. Gerstner, 24, of Arnold and Tammy L. Cantrell, 44, of Lemay. Gerstner worked as a cook and Cantrell worked as a waitress.
At press time, the Akins brothers were being held without bond.
Police had searched through records of employees who had been recently fired and this, in part, led to Oundr’e Akins’ arrest during the evening of Nov. 12.
Illinois State Police entered the Cahokia residence where the Akins brothers lived early on the morning of Nov. 13 and arrested Anthony Akins while also taking evidence from the home.
County officials have said that after reviewing employee records and interviewing restaurant workers and people near the store on the morning of the Nov. 10 shootings as well as evidence collected from the scene, the Akins brothers were identified as suspects.
Less than $200 was taken during the robbery, according to St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Bob McCulloch.
A store vendor on his regular route delivering goods to Steak ‘n Shake told police he arrived at the restaurant around 4:50 a.m. Nov. 10 and saw Cantrell, who he believed was injured, lying on the floor. The vendor then called 911, and Mehlville Fire Protection District paramedics and St. Louis County Police responded.
St. Louis County Police Media Relations Officer Tracy Panus previously said that after emergency responders entered the restaurant, they discovered Gerstner in a separate part of the store.
