Board OKs pay increases for Mehlville administrators

School board approves pay increases for administrators; Murphy votes ‘no’
Chris Gaines
Chris Gaines

After a pay freeze last year, every Mehlville School District administrator will receive a raise this year, except Superintendent Chris Gaines.

Gaines signed his new contract earlier this month. Like he did last year, Gaines will make $205,500 this year. Next year, he will make $210,000, and in the third year of the contract, he could receive an increase of ranging from zero percent to 6 percent.

The new contract closely follows Gaines’ current pact, which requires him to live full time in the district and grants him five weeks of vacation and 15 leave days each year.

Gaines’ initial contract in February 2015 paid health insurance benefits for him and his family under a legal interpretation that he was the district’s sole employee. But the new contract, like the revised contract last year, pays Gaines the same benefits that other employees receive.

Gaines’ new contract includes a clause that was also in his first contract that states he will be evaluated by February of the next year.

The board voted in late May to approve administrative raises 6-1, with board member Jamey Murphy opposed.
