Earlier this month, the Blades Elementary School Student Council – composed of over 50 third, fourth and fifth graders – organized a rubber duck-selling campaign.
To optimize efficiency, students divided into two groups. The first group visited classrooms at the start of each day for a week with “duck gram” slips, while the second group organized the slips, bagged the ducks and delivered them to classrooms. Over the course of the school week, 565 ducks were sold.
After school on Feb. 11, Blades Student Council students visited Mehlville Fire Protection District Station 2, 5434 Telegraph Road, and Mehlville Fire Protection District Station 6, 6870 Telegraph Road, to deliver cookies, chips, drinks, pasta and sandwiches to first responders. Two posters thanking the first responders for their service and protection in the community were also presented. Everything was purchased with the funds raised from the rubber duck-selling campaign.
While at the stations, the firefighters and EMTs spoke with students about their jobs, gave them tours and showed off some of the equipment they use – including the trucks.
This fundraiser was inspired by a fundraiser for first responders done 15 years ago at Oakville Middle School.
