Another candidate files for council

Another candidate recently filed for the Democratic nomination in a County Council race after the candidate who previously signed up for the primary withdrew.

Valery Starr of Kirkwood filed on April 28 for the Aug. 3 Democratic primary for the 3rd District council seat after west county resident Kathy Schweitzer withdrew her name on April 21.

State law requires election officials to reopen filing if the only candidate for a primary withdraws after regular filing ends.

Starr is expected to challenge incumbent Councilman Colleen Wasinger, R-Town and Country, in the general election on Nov. 2.

Wasinger, who is seeking her second four-year term on the council, is unopposed in the Republican primary.

A Democratic primary candidate also re-cently withdrew from the 5th District council race. Allison Rubin of Brentwood withdrew April 16.

That leaves two Democratic primary candidates, Pat Dolan of Richmond Heights and Terri Williams of Webster Groves.

Whoever wins the party’s nomination will face Randy Jotte of Webster Groves, who is unopposed in the Republican primary.

Incumbent 5th District Council Chair Barbara Fraser, D-University City, is running for state Senate.
