Earlier this year, Kevin M. Smith of Affton was chosen to represent the Missouri chapter of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) at its annual pilgrimage to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Washington, D.C.
One member hailing from 48 of the 50 states was present at this year’s solemn ceremony, held on May 4, where each placed a state wreath at the tomb. Only Alaska and Hawaii were absent.
After laying the wreaths, a moment of silence was observed to reflect on the sacrifices of the fallen.
“Three days of awe … it was just incredible,” Smith’s wife, Janet, said of the experience and the couple’s time in Washington.
The IOOF’s pilgrimage to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier began in 1934.
