After dropping three straight games earlier in the season, the Affton Cougars football team has pulled off back-to-back wins and in doing so has improved its record on the season to 3-3.

In its most recent victory last weekend, Kornell Simmons ran for 255 yards and scored three touchdowns as Affton raced out to a 27-0 lead, eventually settling for a 27-14 win over Berkeley. Simmons scored on runs of 1, 60 and 18 yards — all in the first half — and Affton Coach Dan Oliver was pleased with the performance of his team.

“Things went pretty smoothly today,” Oliver said after the game. “Our defense played fantastic and we kind of got things back to normal.”

D.J. Ford added a 38-yard touchdown run in the third quarter that put Affton up by four touchdowns, which was answered immediately when Berkeley’s Tony La-Grone returned the kickoff 85 yards to get the Bulldogs on the board. Oliver told the Call he was feeling pretty good about the game until that kick was brought back for a touchdown.

“We were clicking along pretty good until that kickoff,” he said. “But overall it was a really nice day for all of us. We did the things we wanted to do.”

As for the show put on by Simmons, Oliver could see it coming. “He had the idea that we were not losing before the game. He was very vocal and fired up,” Oliver said. “And we were able to go back to some of the things we did early in the year — including running Kornell.”

On deck for the Cougars is 1-5 Jennings, which have really struggled over the past month. After starting out 1-1 and handling DuBourg 40-16 in week two, the Warriors have not scored a point since and have lost four in a row.

During that span, they have dropped games to Berkeley (54-0), MICDS (49-0), Clayton (43-0) and Ladue (36-0). Affton and Jennings will play as the Cougars celebrate homecoming at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Affton High School, 8309 Mackenzie Road.
