The Oakville Senior High School girls’ basketball team recently prevailed over Farmington in a game that was nothing less than a battle.
The 4-2 Tigers played host to Farmington and came away with a 47-45 victory that was well earned, according to Oakville head coach Paul Harrington.
“It was one heck of a game,” Harrington told the Call. “Farmington has always been a tough and aggressive team. We’re feeling pretty good about a quality win over a very tough ball club.”
Oakville High’s Sherry Zehner led the Tigers in scoring with 16 points and four rebounds in the win over the Black Knights.
The junior center’s two three-pointers in the beginning of the third quarter is what really helped open up the game, according to the Tigers head coach.
“Sherry hit two really big three-pointers there in the beginning of the second half,” Harrington said. “Those really loosened up Farmington’s defense.”
Two other players who contributed heavily in Oakville’s win over Farmington were juniors Lindsay Degonia and Faith Zabek, both of whom scored eight points.
Degonia complemented her eight-point performance with four steals, one assist and three rebounds against the Black Knights.
“She (Degonia) really hustles and anticipates things very well,” Harrington said. “She’s always out there attacking and she hit several shots from the corner that really helped us.”
Zabek’s eight points were actually overshadowed by her 11 rebounds and two steals against Farmington.
“We’ve been putting a lot of pressure on our post players to really hit the boards,” Harrington said. “We just have to have patience and get her the ball so that she can score for us.”
Up next for the Tigers is a challenging Suburban West Conference game Friday night at home against a very talented Lafayette squad.
The Lancers have a variety of scoring options in Danielle Boraz (12 points per game), Tori Hartin (14.8 ppg.), Kelsey Park (9.4 ppg.) and Amy Vickroy (10.3 ppg.).
“We had two tough opponents this past week and now we have Mehlville and Lafayette this week,” Harrington said.
“I think that Lafayette is one of the best teams in the area. It’s only going to make us better to play a quality team like Lafayette,” he added.
The Tigers conference showdown with Lafayette is marked for a 6 p.m. start.
