Students at Beasley Elementary surprised one of their beloved volunteers Wednesday by helping her cover some of the cost of getting a new service dog.
Sue Thompson and Droopy have been partners and best friends for years, with Droopy helping Thompson with her balance and mobility.
But Droopy is now 12 years old — nearing retirement age for a service dog, and the cost of a new dog is about $6,000. Throughout the year, Beasley students have been quietly raising money through popcorn sales, hot chocolate sales and many other fundraisers. On Wednesday, Beasley students surprised Thompson and presented her with a check for $1,200 to help pay for a new service dog.
When Droopy does get to retire, he’ll be staying with Sue and her new service dog.
