Youth selected for national performing band

Eric Schweizer, son of Greg and Diane Schweizer of Oakville, has been selected to perform with a national performing organization called the Sound of America Honor Band and Chorus, according to a news release.

Eric has been alto saxophonist with the Symphonic Band and the Advanced Jazz Band at DeSmet Jesuit High School. He also plays baritone saxophone, clarinet and piano. He has participated as a member of the St. Louis Metro District High School Honors Band and in the Missouri State Solo and Ensemble Festival.

His other achievements include All-American Scholar, U.S. Achievement Academy, Who’s Who Among American High School Students, a National Young Leaders Conference nominee and a Scholar Athlete Award. School activities include racquetball, Junior Classical League, History Club and working with children at Wohlwend Elementary School in Oakville as part of his Junior Service Project.

He will join other select student musicians chosen from applicants representing nearly every state when the Sound of America Honor Band and Chorus begins its 2004 European Concert Tour in July.

All student performers will meet July 2 on the campus of Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa. After four days of intensive rehearsal and orientation, the group will depart the JFK International Airport in New York for Frankfurt, Germany.

The group is scheduled to present 10 performances in some of Europe’s finest concert halls during its 25-day concert tour.

Students will experience the cultures of six countries: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, France and Luxembourg.

The Sound of America Honor Band and Chorus, celebrating its 28th year in 2004, is recognized as one of the finest and most successful European Concert Tour programs in existence. It has received international acclaim for its exemplary success in achieving outstanding cultural relationships with European countries.

Students who have qualified for the Sound of America membership are responsible for all costs. Those who would like to assist Eric in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity can make tax-deductible donations as follows: Eric Schweizer/Sound of America, P.O. Box 510202, St. Louis, Mo. 63151.
