YMCA to sponsor 34th annual ‘Bookfair’ starting Friday at Kennedy Rec Complex

The 34th annual YMCA “Bookfair” to benefit literacy programs will take place from Friday, Aug. 17, through Wednesday, Aug. 22, at the Kennedy Recreation Complex, 6050 Wells Road.

Bookfair hours will be:

• First Selection Night — from 4 to 10 p.m. Friday. Admission is $10.

• Free admission will be offered from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday through Wednesday.

• Half-price books will be offered from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

• Ten dollars a box books will be offered from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

The Y Bookfair has raised more than $1.6 million for Y Community Literacy, according to a news release.

Y Literacy provides free one-on-one reading tutoring to children and adults, free books and parenting support programs at 26 locations throughout the region.

The Y Bookfair involves roughly 400 volunteers logging more than 9,000 hours.

Over the course of six months, roughly 1 million books, records and CDs are collected, sorted and placed for sale — attracting customers from 20 states.
