Wymore shines in Oakville wrestling tourney

In the sports arena, several events test the human body’s strength, endurance and perseverance.

The Ironman Triathlon, the Tour de France and swimming the English Channel are just a few of those events. Yet if you were at the Oakville Wrestling Invitational last weekend, you just may have to give that event your vote after each of the six teams participating competed in five dual meets in just one day.

“We had some really good individual performances,” Oakville head coach Tim Vogel told the Call. “We knew going in that it was going to be a tough day. I think the kids are improving every day and did a great job this weekend.”

Oakville opened the invitational with a tough 43-24 loss to Hannibal and immediately turned around and dropped a 59-9 decision to nationally ranked Mater Dei High School of Evansville, Ind.

The Tigers’ woes continued against a tough Farmington squad as the Black and Gold came up short in a 49-24 loss to the Black Knights.

Yet Oakville bounced back late in the afternoon with a 42-37 decision over Althoff.

The Tigers’ final match of the day resulted in a heartbreaking 37-34 loss to Ste. Genevieve.

One Oakville wrestler who had an outstanding showing at the invitation was senior (heavyweight) Nick Wymore, who racked up a perfect 5-0 record in dual competition last weekend. Wymore’s performance solidified his bid as being one of the best heavyweight wrestlers in the state.

“I think he’s one of the best,” Vogel said. “Nick’s one of the best heavyweights in the state.”

Junior Ryan Sutton (189 pounds) and sophomore Darren Green (103 pounds) both accumulated a mark of 4-1 in dual competition over the weekend, which Vogel thought was quite an accomplishment.

“Ryan’s only loss was to a kid from Mater Dei who’s nationally ranked,” Vogel said. “He’s another one that I think can do some damage at state.”

Vogel also was quite vocal about Green and his performance in the invitational.

“Darren’s only loss was to a kid from Farmington who’s ranked first in the state,” Vogel said. “He did one hell of a job and has been getting better every match.”

The Tigers travel to Webster Groves for an important Suburban South Conference dual meet with the Statesmen at 6:30 p.m. today — Jan. 15.

“I don’t really know how strong of a team they are,” Vogel said. “We’re hoping that we can win against Webster. You don’t want to go out there and take anyone lightly.”
