Victory over St. Charles marks very first on-the-road win of ’04 for Lindbergh boys

Although they may not classify themselves as “Road Warriors” just yet, the Lindbergh High School boys’ basketball team has realized that it can win on the road.

The Flyers (6-10, 0-3 Suburban West) had not won a game on the road since a nail biting 49-47 win over Webster Groves in the Webster Groves Invitational in mid-December.

Of the Flyers’ seven losses on the road, five were by double digits, including a 77-37 loss to perennial powerhouse Vashon.

Yet the slate was wiped clean last Friday evening as the Flyers slapped a 51-48 loss onto St. Charles. Lindbergh’s win was just what the doctor ordered, according to head coach Ken Libby.

“We were pleased with the win,” Libby told the Call. “What we needed was a good road win.”

The Flyers held a 25-18 lead at halftime, but found themselves holding onto a 34-33 advantage by the third quarter. Libby and his troops knew that the fourth quarter was going to be nothing less than a battle.

“I thought that in the first half we played pretty good team defense,” Libby said. “It got down to being a pretty tough game.”

The Flyers were led by Richard Williams’ 18-point scoring effort, in which he generated five steals and five assists in the win.

“Richard played pretty well,” Libby said. “He got our break going and helped us get the ball inside.”

Life does not get any easier for the Flyers as they play host to Parkway Central this Friday for a conference showdown with the Colts.

Central currently is 14-5 and is led by the hot shooting of Matt Feldhaus who has been averaging 14.9 points a game this season.

“We hope to be competitive,” Libby said. “Matt Feldhaus is having a good year and has a nice supporting cast. We’ve got to keep them off the boards and make them work for their shots.”

The Parkway Central contest is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
