Veteran finally receives Bronze Star

World War II veteran Roland Gunsaullus, 96, a south county resident, finally received the Bronze Star medal he earned for his service during the war. On Friday, Rep. Russ Carnahan presented Gunsaullus with the Bronze Star, along with re-issues of some medals Gunsaullus already has. The Bronze Star for heroic or meritorious achievement is awarded to those who served after Dec. 6, 1941. ‘It’s really an honor for me to be here, really on behalf of our country and because of your service,’ Carnahan told Gunsaullus, ‘and this amazing array of medals is really a tribute to your bravery in battle, your courage and to your strength.’ Gunsaullus fought in Normandy after D-Day. Some of his children and grandchildren were present when he received the medals.
