Utility waste landfill proposed for south county

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources will conduct a public awareness session Aug. 14 on the permitting process for a proposed utility waste landfill in south county.

Meramec Energy Center has obtained preliminary site investigation approval to begin a geologic investigation for the construction of a utility waste landfill at 8200 Fine Road, roughly 3.6 miles southeast of the intersection of Interstate 55 and Route 141. A detailed site investigation work plan is being prepared.

The awareness session, during which representatives of the Department of Natural Resources and Meramec Energy Center will be on hand to answer questions, will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Rogers Elementary School, 7700 Fine Road.

The department reviews all applications submitted by cities, counties and private owners to ensure that solid waste landfills are properly designed and constructed. Technical factors that protect Missouri’s environment are also examined. This public session will explain the application review process and the approximate time-line for ruling on the permit application.

People requiring special services or accommodations to attend the meeting should contact Darrell Hartley of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources’ Solid Waste Management Program at P.O. Box 176, Jefferson City, Mo. 65102-0176, or call (753) 751-5401 or (800) 361-4827.

For more information on site investigations, contact the department’s Division of Geology and Land Survey at (573) 368-2100.
