Two boys and three girls recently won the first round of competition in the Elks’ Hoop Shoot free-throw contest at Queen of All Saints and have been named Oakville Elks champions.
First-place trophies were awarded to the following winners:
Boys
Zach Morley, 12, St. Francis of Assisi.
Matthew Miller, 11, Wohlwend Elementary School.
Girls
Alex Perry, 13, Oakville Middle School.
Hailey Putney, 10, Seckman Elementary School.
Jessica Crenshaw, 8, St. Francis of Assisi.
All contestants received a certificate of participation.
The five champions now advance to the district finals Sunday, Dec. 28, at Windsor High School, where they will compete with other winners from throughout the area.
The Hoop Shoot began as a local program by Elks in Corvallis, Ore., in 1946, and now is in its 37th year of national competition.
More than 3 million boys and girls are expected to participate this year, according to a news release.
