Turnovers plague Oakville High Tigers in 18-9 loss to Parkway South Patriots

For the Call

Despite taking a 3-0 lead in the first quarter Friday night, the Oakville Senior High School football team was plagued with turnovers in the Tigers’ 18-9 loss to Parkway South.

“It was a sloppy game for us,” Oakville head coach Arlee Conners said. “We fumbled the ball on kickoff returns and had two bad snaps on punts that really cost us. Turn-overs are still a big part of our problems.”

The Tigers (3-3, 1-3 Suburban West) grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first quarter as place kicker Jeff Rongy nailed a 32-yard field goal with 6:05 remaining. The field goal was the first of the season for Rongy.

“Jeff’s a young kid that’s getting some valuable experience,” Conners said. “He’s really taking most of the opportunity.”

The Tigers were silent throughout the second and third quarters as Parkway South’s Chris Tsevis scored on a 46-yard run with 4:27 left to play in the first half.

The Patriots scored again with 33 seconds left in the first half as Chris Martin caught a 23-yard pass from Steve Addison.

Parkway South extended its lead to 18-3 in the third quarter as Kirk Stilwell scored on a three-yard run with 9:47 left.

Oakville had its lone touchdown midway through the fourth quarter as senior tailback Brandon Dillard scored on a seven-yard run with 7:27 remaining.

Dillard had seven carries for 19 yards rushing and four receptions for 56 yards. He also had one pass attempt for 30 yards.

“He’s a hard-nosed runner,” Conners said. “I thought he had a pretty decent night.”

Oakville’s Fred Walton led all running backs with 14 carries for 50 yards. The junior also had one reception for six yards.

“Fred’s really come into his own here lately,” Conners said. “He’s definitely showing some spark at the running back position.”

Up next for the Tigers is a Suburban West Conference contest at 7 p.m. Friday at Kirk-wood. The Pioneers are 4-1 and are coming off a 40-21 win over Mehlville. Kirkwood’s lone loss of the season was a 24-21 setback to Parkway South.

“They give you a lot of problems with a variety of weapons that can beat you in several different ways,” Conners said. “Our team is definitely going to be up for the challenge. I’m looking for our team to go out there and execute and take care of our responsibilities and assignments.”
