After a 6-0 start, the Lindbergh High School football team has run into a three-game losing streak, including Fri-day’s 23-19 loss to Vianney.

The at-home defeat for the Flyers (6-3, 5-1 Suburban West) essentially eliminates Lindbergh from the playoffs after a 13-7 loss at St. Louis University High the previous week.

“Our kids actually played well, we just had a lot of turnovers,” Lindbergh head coach Tom Beauchamp told the Call. “You just can’t do that against a good team like Vianney.”

The Flyers fell behind 3-0 in the first quarter when Vian-ney’s Nick Suda nailed a 28-yard field goal with 4:29 left in the first quarter. Lindbergh proceeded to trail 9-0 when Vianney quarterback Steve Callanan connected with Tim Windhorst on a nine-yard touchdown pass with 6:49 left in the first half.

Lindbergh finally responded in the third quarter as junior quarterback Robby Meeh scored on a one-yard touchdown run with 4:23 left in the quarter. Meeh finished the game with a 9-23 performance for 156 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions.

“Robby’s a competitor,” Beauchamp said. “He’s the kind of kid you want in a leadership role in that when he comes into a game, he comes to play.”

Vianney extended its lead to 16-6 when Callanan connected with Windhorst on an 11-yard touchdown pass with 2:24 left in the third quarter. Lindbergh trimmed Vianney’s lead to 16-13 in the fourth quarter when Meeh connected with senior wide receiver Kelan Bannecke on an 18-yard touchdown pass with 11:46 left in the game. Bannecke finished the evening with four receptions for 44 yards.

“Kelan’s a senior and he knows that it’s all on the line,” Beauchamp said. “He really finds a way to contribute to his team.”

Vianney answered Bannecke’s touchdown reception with a two-yard touchdown run by Greg Hendrian with 8:09 left to give the Golden Griffins a 23-13 advantage. Lindbergh scored its final touchdown of the game when senior wide receiver Martin Bates hauled in a 22-yard pass with 4:37 left to slice into Vianney’s 10-point advantage. Bates had three receptions for a team-leading 88 yards receiving.

“Martin played really well,” Beauchamp said. “He’s always out on the field trying to make things happen for us.”

The Flyers’ final game of the season will be at 7 p.m. Fri-day when Lindbergh travels to Kirkwood for a Suburban West Conference meeting with the Pioneers.

Kirkwood is 7-1 overall and is coming off a 43-21 win over St. Louis University High. But both Lindbergh and Kirkwood have 5-1 marks in conference play, which means that the victor in Friday’s game wins the Suburban West Conference championship.

“There’s no doubt that Kirkwood is the team to beat in the area,” Beauchamp said. “The kids are excited about the challenge, but we’ve got our work cut out for us.”
