Try these frightfully simple costume ideas

Help youngsters celebrate the true spirit of Halloween with easy-to-make disguises that are sure to scare up goodies galore. Begin with wardrobe basics such as tee shirts, hooded sweats, leggings or tights. A few store bought accessories, some velcro tape for closures and to attach removable trims and decorations, and a little imagination are the other elements needed.

• To make a fairy or ballerina costume, layer a simple net skirt over tights and matching tee. Decorate headband with tulle, flowers or rhinestones.

• For a witch costume, use a long black tee over striped tights. A store-bought witch’s hat and a small broom complete the look.

• For superheroes, magicians and wizards, add a simple felt cape over tights and decorate with colorful felt cutouts and trims.

• For animal costumes, overlay a fake fur cape or tunic over tights. Attach felt animal ears to a headband or hood with velcro sticky back coins.
