Troop 169 finishes totem pole

Troop 169 finishes totem pole

Boy Scouts from Troop 169 of Assumption Parish School have been working on this totem pole for the past year and a half. The Scouts and their leaders installed the pole at the S-F Scout Camp on Nov. 29. The hand-carved pole is 14 feet tall with a 4.5-foot handcrafted eagle on top. The pole is a white oak tree that was cut and stripped as part of the project. The eagle on top in a pipe and wire frame and fiberglass shell is designed to protect the wooden pole. Thirty-eight scouts and more than 20 leaders spent roughly 1,500 hours designing, carving, painting and installing the pole. The Scout project leader, Ben Griffard, and his father, Joe Griffard, worked with Scoutmaster David Schaefer and the rest of the troop in planning and carving the wood. Assistant Scoutmaster Jeff Cantwell led the Scouts in the creation of the eagle.
