‘Tolerance’ brouhaha thousands of years old

To the editor:

In response to the letter by Nancy Stanfill-McCarty, I am a Christian and we are not all God’s “creatures,” but we are his “craftsmanship” designed with purpose and intended for excellence.

God, in Christian theology, no matter what variety, accepts every human being with open arms, but historically in relation to the Judeao-Christian traditions does not accept every human behavior with open arms nor does he accept every human perspective with open arms.

Now maybe you have a different God than I, which is absolutely your right in this country, but the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob does not condone homosexuality. It is a sin according to scriptural-based Jewish and Christian teaching.

There is no scientific evidence that definitively proves that homosexuality is genetic. But for a moment let’s do as John Lennon has suggested and “imagine there is no heaven” and use old Charlie Darwin as our measuring stick of right and wrong.

If the purpose of our existence is “survival of the species,” then homosexuality is a genetic anomaly, which has absolutely no survival value. In the evolutionary scheme of things, homosexuality would be considered a down/inferior trait apart from the religious influence of any “old dead white guys.”

Empirically speaking, human sexuality as a whole is a very mysterious thing with many unanswered questions. In ancient Judaism God told the children of Israel to abstain from pork. At the time of this command no one understood the reason.

Thousands of years later we discover that pork, at that time of God’s command, was severely diseased, and its consumption would have caused massive fatalities amongst the Israelites.

In retrospect, we realize that the directive of abstinence from pork given by God at that time was intended for the protection of the people.

Unlike abstinence from pork, homosexuality is not something in the Scripture, textually speaking, that can be dispensationalized or negated through some creative contextualization without doing an incredible disservice to the integrity of the text.

We live in an age where we believe that we have invented the wheel in terms of morality and an understanding of the human condition.

I have news for you: “There is nothing new under the sun,” and all this “PC” brouhaha about “tolerance” was going on thousands of years ago in Athenian democracy, so noted by Plato in Socrates “criticism” of democracy in “The Republic.”

I would submit to you to consider that before your world ever existed that God’s holy word has existed, and will continue to exist long after you have departed from this life.

Like it or not, God’s word is something to seriously — not an article from Newsweek or reading “The DiVinci Code” — contend with. There truly is more wisdom in God’s word than on Oprah, Newsweek or coming from mainline Protestant or Catholic pulpits in this city that espouse a syncretistic view of faith and morals.
