While the Oakville Senior High School girls’ tennis team graduated nearly half of its roster from last year, the Tigers are working hard toward a solid 2009 season.

“The kids have been working hard,” Oakville head coach Linda Gebauer told the Call.

“We lost half of the varsity to graduation, so we have some holes to fill. I’m feeling we just may lack some experience this year.”

Senior Tori Wheeler returns for her fourth season on the varsity squad as the Tigers’ No. 1 singles player.

“Tori’s got a fantastic game,” Gebauer said. “She’s just a very solid player.”

Another senior who will see time in singles play is Melissa Heskett.

“Melissa’s definitely got the ability and is a good hustler on the court,” Gebauer said. “She can run a lot of balls down and hits the ball solid.”

Junior Jami Black is another member of the lineup who will play singles this season.

“Jami’s a very steady, all-around player,” Gebauer said. “She’s improved her game tremendously this season.”

Seniors Cristina Catarinicchia, Liz Weiss, Lindsay Stith and Valerie Barron as well as juniors Hxi Wang and Samantha Nguyen will move up to the varsity squad.

“Both Cristina and Liz played No. 1 JV doubles last year,” Gebauer said. “We expect them to break onto the varsity team this year.”
