With state qualifiers Katie Nassif and Maura Miller returning for the 2009 season, the Oakville Senior High School girls’ golf team is poised to be one of the more competitive squads in the Suburban West Conference.

“We have everybody back from last year, so we should have a strong and experienced team,” head coach Cindy Maulin said. “It’s really a treat to have so many experienced players back this year.”

Both Nassif and Miller qualified for the Missouri Class 2 Championships last fall at Silo Ridge Golf and Country Club in Bolivar.

Nassif tied for 97th overall at state last season with a first-round score of 106 and a second-round score of 96 for a combined score of 202.

“Katie’s very long off the tee and played a lot over the summer,” Maulin said. “The one thing that I’ve really noticed about Katie this year is that she’s matured as a player.”

Miller tied for 108th at state with a combined score of 209 — a first-round score of 108 and a second-round score of 101.

“Maura’s a very steady and smart golfer,” Maulin said. “I think that Maura and Katie are both going to be great leaders on this year’s team.”

Juniors Lauren Buschhorn, Morgan Wahl and Laura Brunette also will keep the Tigers competitive in match play this year.

“Lauren competed quite a bit in our match play, and Morgan’s taken lessons over the summer and has shown steady improvement,” Maulin said. “Laura’s come a long way in a short period of time and has gotten much more comfortable in the competitive aspect of golf.”
