Reggie Ward ran for 116 yards and two touchdowns leading the Oakville Tigers football team to a 35-0 trouncing of North-west, giving them their fifth win in six games.

Oakville, now 5-3 overall, is more importantly 1-0 in district play and is playing as well now as it has in recent memory.

Aside from the effort and results from Ward, Oakville also got a strong performance from kicker Brendan Marks and its defense.

Marks nailed three extra points for the Tigers and also kicked field goals of 21 and 26 yards.

Defensively, the Tigers were paced by Alonzo Metcalf, who snared two interceptions in helping the Tigers post a shutout. Metcalf also had 34 yards rushing. Oakville Coach Jerry Maulin has reason for optimism, but is aware of the task at hand.

“We know we’ve got a job to do, and if we do that job we can win,” Maulin said. “It’s pretty cut and dry.”

Overall, Oakville had seven runners combine for 285 yards on the ground against Northwest. Joining Ward with a nice effort out of the backfield was Dan Graham, who picked up 73 yards rushing on the night. Graham also had a one-yard touchdown run. Even with the win, Maulin knows they have not won anything yet.

“Northwest was short-handed with in-juries, and that really hurt them,” Maulin told the Call. “But we did play really well, especially on defense.” Northwest, with the loss, is just 1-7 this season.

The next test for Oakville comes this weekend at Parkway South, where the Tigers will take a Patriots team that rolled over 2002 state finalist Lindbergh last Friday night, 23-13. There’s no doubt that Oakville is going to have its hands full.

However, Maulin will have the red-hot Tigers well prepared for the 5-3 Patriots this weekend.

“We know that South has a strong defensive line and group of linebackers,” he said. “But right now, we have a very positive attitude and expectations are high.”
