Consistently inconsistent may be the best way to describe the Oakville Senior High School girls’ soccer team.

“We’ve been playing inconsistently to say the least,” head coach Dave Robben told the Call. “We’re a team that has potential. The talent is here, it’s just a matter of doing what we’re capable of doing.”

The Tigers (10-7-1, 5-1-1 Suburban West) have struggled through a five-game span with one win, three losses and one tie.

But with only one conference loss, they’re in the hunt for a title. Plus, they’re better than the 10-7-1 overall record shows. The Tigers have lost to three nationally ranked non-conference teams.

Last Thursday, Oakville posted a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over O’Fallon, Ill. to break a three-game winless streak.

“We stepped up our play in the second half,” Robben said. “The positive was that we were able to keep our composure.”

Oakville snapped the shutout in the second half as sophomore forward Brooke In-man notched her sixth goal of the season. Inman also has four assists this season.

“Brooke’s a very intense player and has a very strong desire to win,” Robben said. “She’s learning that fine line of playing smart and playing hard.”

Sophomore Caitlin Cox later booted a direct kick from about 30 yards out for the game winner. It was her first goal of the 2005 season.

“Caitlin can strike a dead ball really well and it showed,” Robben said. “She’s really started to settle down and has the tools to play in our system.”

Oakville unfortunately found itself back in the loss column with a 3-0 setback to na-tionally ranked St. Joseph’s Academy.

It was the sixth time Oakville has been shutout this season.

“St. Joe’s is St. Joe’s,” Robben said. “We went into that game minus two players in (freshman midfielder) Megan Wingenbach and (freshman defender) Amanda Teschner.

“We were feeling pretty good at halftime with the score being 1-0,” he said. “In the second half we just didn’t match up really well with them.”

Oakville finishes the regular season at 5 p.m. today — May 12 — as Francis Howell North comes to town.

The Knights are 10-9 overall and will be looking to spoil Oakville’s Senior Night.

“Howell North is a team that has some history and has a state title,” Robben said. “They’re very well coached and present a formidable opponent for us.”
