Three weeks ago life wasn’t looking too rosy for the boys’ baseball team at Oakville Senior High School.

Oakville was staring at a mark of 8-6 overall and the thoughts of a district championship were about as realistic as the Cubs winning the World Series.

But that was before the Tigers (16-7, 5-3 Suburban South) won eight of their last nine games, including a stout 9-3 victory over Mehlville.

“Things are going well for us right now,” Oakville head coach Rich Sturm told the Call.

“I just hope it continues because we’ve really got some momentum going and the kids have gained a lot of confidence with some big wins.”

The Tigers racked up nine runs on 13 hits as they jumped out to a commanding 4-1 after three innings played. Yet that didn’t keep Sturm and his staff from keeping starting pitcher Andy Marks on the mound.

The junior hurler threw five innings pitched with two earned runs on five hits. He walked four and retired seven via strikeout for the win. At the plate, Marks was 4-5 with one run batted in.

“He had a great day and could have actually gotten five hits,” Sturm said.

“It rained the entire game and the footing was wet. But considering the circumstances, he did very well.”

The Tigers were scheduled take on Vianney at Mehlville Tuesday — after the Call went to press — in the semifinal game of the District No. 3 tournament.

“Whoever wins our district has got a heck of a shot at going far in the playoffs,” Sturm said.

“It’s going to be an exciting two days.”

The District No. 3 championship game of the tournament was scheduled for a 4:15 p.m. start Wednesday at Vianney.
