To the editor:

This is in response to the letter on the marriage amendment in the May 20th edition of the Call.

I agree with Ms. Trefts that Congress is about to make important history and I also agree that it is our duty to help representatives make the appropriate decisions to protect our future, but where we differ is that I believe they should protect us from closed-minded views such as those that suggest we take rights away from citizens, even a right as simple as marrying the person you love.

Please remember these people also pay taxes, they pave your roads and send your children to school just as much as you do.

The world is too diverse now to cling to the ideals of a society that forced individuals to hide who they are. I also ask you to call your representatives. But instead of reinforcing sheltered views, tell them you want equality for all and protect our kids from those like Ms. Trefts, who feel they are a higher power allowed to tell us what we can and cannot do within our own lives because, again, Ms. Trefts is right, the children of today are tomorrow’s leaders.
