When you take a look at the roster of the baseball team at Lindbergh High School, you realize that the Flyers return seven starters from the 2003 campaign.

The Flyers struggled last season to a record of 12-11 in which they went 6-8 in the Suburban West Conference.

Lindbergh head coach Darrin Scott hopes that his group of talented seniors can piece together some of the same success that they’ve experienced the past two years on the football field.

“It’s nice going into the season having guys that know the system,” Scott told the Call.

“This is the last run with this good athletic group of seniors. I’m hoping that we can put something together that’s as memorable as their football season,” he added.

At second base for the Flyers will be Brock Bond, who held a .328 batting average last season with 16 runs batted in on 22 hits.

The senior signed with the University of Arkansas last fall to play baseball for the Razorbacks.

“He’s coming into the season healthy for the first time,” Scott said. “He’s gotten a little stronger and it could be a real coming-out season for him as high school baseball goes.”

Behind the plate this season for the Flyers will be senior Andrew Spitzfaden, a catcher many consider one of the best in the area.

Spitzfaden batted .333 last season with a team-high six doubles. He also drove in 12 runs on 22 hits.

“It’s been a real luxury having Andrew behind the plate,” Scott said. “We’ve got some inexperience on the mound and he’s going to have to step it up and run the pitching staff this season.”

Third baseman Charlie Schinksy also will see some time on the mound this season.

He recorded a mark of 1-2, in which he had two saves and 11 strikeouts with a 7.58 earned run average.

“Right now, we may try him out at shortstop,” Scott said. “He’s probably going in as our lead-off hitter because he’s got some speed and pop with his bat.”

Also in the infield for the Flyers will be first baseman and pitcher Scott Hicks.

“This will be Scott’s second year starting at first base,” the Lindbergh coach said. “He came up with some big hits for us last year and we’re going to need to get us some clutch hits out of him in order to move these guys along.”

The Flyers will have a trio of seniors in the outfield in Mike Mohrman, Chris Luebbert and Jeff Malke.

They’ll be joined by infielder Tony Bogogno and senior pitchers David Ounanian, Mark Spinner, Bobby Buchmann and Adam Laury. They also will be joined by closer Tyler McElliggot.

Lindbergh opens the season on March 22 as they play host to Northwest-House Springs in the first round of the Lindbergh/Mehlville Tournament.

The game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
