Sunset plays host to Senior Golf Championship

The Sunset Country Club will play host to the 56th annual Missouri State Seniors Golf Championship Tuesday, June 21, and Wednesday, June 22.

A field of some 120 golfers 55 and older is expected to take part in the tournament, according to Jim McKinney of Columbia, executive director of the Missouri State Senior Golf Association.

The format will be medal play with shotgun starts both days. Contestants will compete in five-year age categories beginning with 55- to 59-year-olds and continuing into the 80s.

The overall low-net player will receive the Hullverson Trophy, awarded in memory of the late Thomas Hullverson, a prominent St. Louis attorney and one-time Sunset member. The low-gross trophy is named for former Missouri Governor James Blair.

“Sunset is honored and privileged to host the 2005 Missouri Seniors championship,” said Gary Frossard, the club’s board president, adding: “We’re confident the contestants will find our golf course up to the task and among the very best that they have played in recent years.

Sunset was established in 1916 by August A. Busch Sr. and other area business leaders. The golf course, which today plays 6,640 yards, originally was designed by Scotsman Robert Foulis and later re-designed by noted architect Michael Hurdzan.

The club played host to a number of significant events over the past 80 years or so, including the 1946 Western Open won by the legendary Ben Hogan.

Sunset Country Club is east of the Inter-state 270 and Gravois Road interchange.
