To the editor:

This is a response to the letter by Jan Tucker in the Jan. 16 edition of The Call entitled “Bible verses guide this reader’s philosophy on abortion and morality.” I feel like the author has twisted the words from the Bible to conform to her own philosophy of “abortion is evil because it destroys life, and life begins at conception.”

I could not disagree more. This parable refers to injustice to the poor and the needy. In this scenario, the poor and the needy are the women seeking the abortions because they cannot afford to have a baby because they will have to drop out of school or lose their job. Somehow in our society, some people have started to think that a cell, a group of cells, a heartbeat or a fingerprint is more important than the women themselves.

If you ask these people to support birth control for these women to help prevent abortions, they oppose it because they don’t want to support these women having sex because sex outside of marriage is wrong and those women who engage in it are to be scorned.

If you ask these people for taxes to help support the women who would have these babies, they object because these women should not have had sex in the first place and placed this undue burden on society.

In the end, these people really don’t care about protecting innocent babies. They enjoy harshly judging the poor and the needy. It makes them feel good. It makes them feel superior. This attitude must change in our society. I strongly urge people to have more empathy. It will be a step in the right direction.
