Sparks to be honored at reception Dec. 3

A reception honoring Tara Shaw Sparks, the 2003-2004 Missouri Teacher of the Year, will take place from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, in the Sperreng Middle School Library, 12111 Tesson Ferry Road.

The reception for Sparks, an eighth-grade English teacher at Sperreng Middle School in the Lindbergh School District, is open to the community.

This is Sparks’ sixth year of teaching at Sperreng, according to a Lindbergh School District news release.

Since graduating with a bachelor’s of science degree in education from the University of Missouri-Columbia and a master’s of arts degree in teaching from Lindenwood University, Sparks also earned national certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

She is one of 135 Missouri teachers who have achieved this certification.

Sparks is now Missouri’s candidate for the National Teacher of the Year award. The national competition will take place in Dallas in January.

The Missouri Teacher of the Year program is conducted by the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
