South county woman marks 100th birthday

County Executive Charlie Dooley declared April 15 ‘Ann Ray Day’ to honor the 100th birthday of Ray, left, a former ‘Rosie the Riveter’ who made turrets in a St. Louis factory during World War II before managing a doughnut shop for many years in California. Ray now lives in the Orchid Terrace retirement community to be close to her 18 nieces and nephews, and she celebrated April 11 with family and fellow residents. ‘This is wonderful,’ she said, wiping away tears as local students sang ‘Happy Birthday.’ After the party, attendees released 100 balloons into the sky for Ray.
