School districts, OASIS seek reading volunteers

It’s a new school year, but a continuing struggle for many young pupils trying to learn to read.

Local school districts, working with OASIS, are looking for volunteers 50 years old and older to share the gift of reading with these young pupils, according to a news release.

Volunteers spend one hour per week during the school day as a tutor, mentor and friend working one on one with a child in kindergarten to third grade. As they talk, laugh, read and write together, they become friends.

Training, materials and ongoing support are provided for volunteers to work in their neighborhood school.

For additional information and September training dates, call OASIS at (314) 995-9506 or visit oasisnet.org/volunteer.
