Sappington Elementary School students recently traveled to Jefferson City High School to compete in the Hershey’s Track and Field Games state level meet.

Students qualified for the state meet during a schoolwide competition earlier this year, according to a news release.

State ribbons were awarded to students who placed eighth or better, with several Sappington students meeting that goal:

• In the 9-10 year old boys’ division, fourth-grader Seth Putnam finished third in the softball throw, fourth in the standing long jump and sixth in the 200-meter dash.

• In the 11-12 year old boys’ division, fifth-grade students David Howard and Brendan Ludwig finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the softball throw.

• In the 11-12 year old girls’ division, fifth-grader Olivia Jones finished third in the softball throw, seventh in the 400-meter run and seventh in the 800-meter run.

The Hershey’s Track and Field Games were started to help get children on the right track, teach lifelong lessons and have fun, according to the organization’s website. It is the largest youth sports program of its kind in North America, with hundreds of thousands of children competing every year.
